Feed-Flattened Time (Definition)

Feed-flattened time is the perceptual condition induced by infinite scroll interfaces, in which the temporal depth of experience is reduced to an eternal present, weakening both memory and anticipation.

Glossary entry: a term that captures the quiet collapse of temporal orientation in digital environments. 4 min read.

Feed-flattened time is a neologism for the experience of time under the regime of the infinite scroll. It names the condition where the felt difference between past, present, and future is erased by an algorithmic stream of content that selects for immediate attention rather than narrative coherence. The term draws on the phenomenology of time consciousness described by Husserl and Heidegger, but adapts it to the structural properties of social media platforms.

Phenomenological Roots

In classical phenomenology, time is not an objective container but a structure of consciousness. The present is always 'thick'—it contains retentions of the just-past and protentions of the imminent future. The feed attacks this thickness. It floods the present with content that has no clear origin or destination, making retention difficult and protention nearly impossible. The result is a flattened temporality: the now expands to fill the entire horizon, but it is a shallow now, a two-dimensional screen that offers no depth.

This flattening is not just a metaphorical description. It corresponds to measurable changes in attention and memory. When time is flattened, the future becomes a loop of possibilities that never arrive, because every possibility is immediately replaced by the next content item. The future is not abolished; it is pre-consumed. It is present as a perpetual 'up next' that never resolves into a settled tomorrow.

Relation to the End of the Future

The phrase 'end of the future' captures the cultural consequence of feed-flattened time. When the future loses its openness, goals lose their motivational force. The term is used in digital philosophy and media studies to describe the paradoxical condition of being stuck in an eternal now that is simultaneously restless and static. It is not that we stop planning; it is that planning becomes indistinguishable from scrolling—an endless rehearsal without a performance.

Feed-flattened time is the temporal signature of an attention economy that profits from the abolition of delay. To live under it is to feel that you are always running, but never toward anything.

Resistance

Resisting feed-flattened time requires deliberately reintroducing temporal distinctions: setting aside periods of 'deep time' without a screen, cultivating practices of memory that are not algorithmic, and reimagining the future as a space of risk rather than a queue of recommendations. The term is a diagnostic tool, but it also implies a direction: a future can be reclaimed only when the present is allowed to be a transition, not a loop.
