The concept of a Boltzmann Brain originates from Ludwig Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of thermodynamics. In a system at equilibrium, small fluctuations are common, but large fluctuations—like the spontaneous assembly of a functioning brain—are incredibly rare. However, given infinite time or infinite space, such rare fluctuations become not only possible but inevitable. A Boltzmann Brain is the extreme example: a fluctuation that creates a sentient observer capable of conscious experience, complete with the illusion of a consistent history and external world.

In modern cosmology, the Boltzmann Brain has become a test for theories of the early universe. If a cosmological model predicts that such brains outnumber ordinary observers (those with a genuine past and surrounding cosmos), then the model is considered problematic—we should find ourselves to be Boltzmann Brains, which we do not appear to be. This argument has been used to constrain theories like eternal inflation and the multiverse.

The Boltzmann Brain paradox can be seen as a cosmic version of Descartes's evil demon: an entity that deceives you about the entire world. But here the deceiver is not a malicious demon but blind, indifferent probability.

Interestingly, the Boltzmann Brain is not just a cosmological problem; it also touches on philosophy of mind. If you were a Boltzmann Brain, what would you experience? Perhaps the same as now—a stream of apparent perceptions, thoughts, and memories. This raises the question of whether we can ever rule out being such a brain, and whether the very notion of a 'true' external world is meaningful if all observations are compatible with transient existence.
