It is the ancient question you have already felt: if one grain of sand is not a heap, and adding one grain to a non-heap never creates a heap, how can a million grains become a heap? This is the Sorites paradox, also called the paradox of the heap, inherited from Eubulides of Miletus, the same ancient logician who developed the liar paradox. At its core lies an inconsistent triad: one grain is not a heap; any addition of a single grain to a non-heap leaves it a non-heap; yet enough grains do form a heap. All three claims seem intuitively true, but together they explode.

Formalizing the bias does not rescue it. Let P(0) mean 'zero grains is not a heap' and assume that if P(n) is true, then P(n+1) is true, because adding one grain cannot matter. By induction, P(10,000) must be true, meaning ten thousand grains are not a heap. The conclusion is absurd, yet every individual step feels unobjectionable. This is the strong form of the paradox: no single grain marks the transition, but somewhere along the sequence the category flips. The term 'sorites' comes from the Greek soros, meaning heap, and Eubulides used it to embarrass the dialecticians of his era.

Consider how quietly threshold terms govern daily life: enough followers to be 'influential', enough debt to be 'unmanageable', enough notifications to be 'overwhelmed'. The Sorites paradox is not a barroom trick; it is the grammar of every slow-burn collapse, from climate change to burnout.

Philosophers have proposed several ways out, though none has won universal agreement. The main strategies target different points of the argument:
