In 1963, Edmund Gettier published a paper that did not contain a single new piece of empirical data. It contained two short stories. Those stories, barely a page in total, accomplished what a century of philosophical arguments had not: they overturned an assumption so entrenched that almost no one had thought to test it. The assumption was that knowledge is justified true belief. The stories showed that it is not.
Gettier's method was simple. Construct a case where a person has a belief that is true, and also has strong evidence for it, but where the evidence is connected to the truth only by accident. If the belief still feels like a guess, you have refuted the definition. Here are the two cases.

In Case I, Smith has what any reasonable person would call overwhelming evidence. The company president told him Jones would get the job. Smith also counted ten coins in Jones's pocket. From these premises, Smith deduces that the successful candidate will have ten coins. But the world has a twist: Smith gets the job, not Jones. And as luck would have it, Smith also has ten coins in his pocket. His belief is true. His evidence was excellent. Yet when we ask whether Smith knew the successful candidate would have ten coins, the answer is no. He was guessing about himself while his evidence was about someone else.
Case II is more subtle, because Smith's justification is about a fact that turns out to be false. Jones owns no Ford—he was renting. Yet Smith's belief “Jones owns a Ford, or Brown is in Barcelona” is true because Brown, randomly chosen as a topic, happens to be in Barcelona. Smith had justified belief in a disjunction; the first disjunct was false, but the second one rescued the truth. Smith never had evidence about Brown's travel plans. He simply inserted the name to form a disjunction. The belief is true by accident.
The common thread in both cases is epistemic luck. The believer cannot distinguish their lucky guess from genuine knowledge. That indistinguishability is the heart of the Gettier problem: if knowledge requires something more than justification, that extra element is invisible from the believer's first-person perspective.
Why do these two stories matter so much? Because they prove that the tripartite definition is not merely incomplete—it is fundamentally misguided. If you try to patch it by adding a fourth condition, you will be tempted to design a condition that excludes these cases. But Gettier's method is repeatable. Philosophers have generated thousands of variations: the sheep in the field, the stopped clock, the fake barn country. Each one slices a different part of our intuitions, and each one shows that justification and truth can come apart.
The two original cases are worth remembering because they are easy to translate into modern life. The job case resembles a business leader whose prediction is right because of an entirely different mechanism than the model suggested. The Ford case mirrors a news consumer who formulates a belief from a reliable-looking source, where the source is wrong but the statement happens to be true for another reason. In both, the intellect is doing its job, but the luck is doing something else.
Gettier's examples are not just logical puzzles. They are psychological portraits of a mind that is correct without being connected to the truth. The next time you feel certain about a prediction, ask yourself: would I be confident if I knew the evidence route? If the answer is no, you are in Gettier territory. And that is not a place where knowledge lives.
